Still reeling from the unexpected sale of the land she and her horses live on, horse rescuer Kelsey Blaine is frantic when she comes home to find her possessions already boxed up and her house being bulldozed without any notice. Normally calm and kind, Kelsey becomes furious and impulsively cuts a privacy fence to confront the culprit–her mysterious neighbor, Joe.

Joe Kilcoyne is in a desperate place. He guards his secrets and hides from the world for a reason. He's the hottest topic of speculation around Whiskey River, but no one has ever dared to get close to him. That is, until fiery Kelsey comes barging straight into his life.

The last thing Joe needs is for Kelsey to breach his defenses and make him confront his past. But when her sunny, open, and determined personality collide with a haunted man with no idea how to reconnect with the world, the sparks that ignite shock them both.

This was just one of those exceptional reads that touch you heart and soul. How could you not love the characters given who they were and what made them that way? Kelsey was so kind and compassionate whether her latest rescue was horse or human. The way she pulled and tugged at Declan, getting him to open up and reveal all that lay inside of him was no easy task but, like with her horses, she didn't give up. And Declan, who'd been horribly abused and had hidden himself away from the world, so needed what Kelsey had to offer. Little by little she coaxed him out of the darkness and into the light. The way their love story unfolds is a thing of beauty.

This story touched me on so many levels as I had a brother who reminded me of Declan. He wasn't abused but was isolated by a disease that kept him alone, without anyone but family most of the time. What little social life he enjoyed was made extra special because of his circumstances. Only he never had the fortune of finding his Kelsey like Declan did. I'm sighing just thinking about it.

Anyway, Kelsey lives on property she doesn't own thanks to the kindness of one of the town's people. She lives in a small cabin that's quite primitive and often goes without the necessities in life in order to make sure her rescue horses are well taken care of. When she learns the property has been sold because the owner needs to retire she understands, but when they start bulldozing her cabin without warning she's ready to panic at the thought of the Whiskey River Rescue having to relocate. She doesn't care about herself, she can sleep anywhere, but the horses are another matter entirely. When she discovers the neighbor next door is the one who bought the property, she goes storming over there to confront him.

Declan is well aware of the fact most of the town's residents think he's crazy. He never goes anywhere, has everything he needs delivered while he secludes himself in his home that resembles a castle. When Kelsey shows up at his door he's more than a little gruff with her but he doesn't want her invading his space. When she mistakes him for the gardner and demands to meet his boss, Declan doesn't correct her assumption, just makes her think "the boss" is unavailable. And thus their relationship begins.

It's a stormy one at first but the more Declan encounters Kelsey, the more he wants to be around her. She intrigues him, challenges him at every turn, and yes, there's an attraction there as well. When Kelsey finds out Declan's having a house built for her, in place of her old cabin, and then provides her with a beautiful trailer to live in until the house is finished, she can't believe it. On top of that, he intends to donate to Whiskey River Rescue in order to keep her horses safe. She'll no longer have to struggle to make ends meet. She's overwhelmed by his kindness and is determined to thank him even if it does mean invading the man's privacy. Just like with her horses, she's now on a mission to rescue Declan.

I can't say enough about this story. Yes, I've read others similar but this one really struck a chord in me. I hated to see it end. I definitely recommend it and I'm most assuredly going to look into other work by the author. Big thumbs up!

Whiskey River Rescue edition by Justine Davis Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews

I loved this novel.

You know the old adage Nothing new under the sun"? It is true, on the macro level. Humans have created and shared stories probably since before language was a thing. We are wired for them, and there isn't a plot that hasn't been done before. But the glory is in the details, the levels of complexity, the nearly infinite combinations even within the boundaries of a given genre. In Romance, it isn't what's got to happen, it's how, who, when, and what they will have to face or overcome to reach the promised ending. Very often an experienced romance reader can tell what has to happen to reach the Happily Ever After. We read to enjoy a writer's craft, well-rounded characters who are compelling, and for the details. Delight us, and we will devote ourselves to your work.

I'm delighted. This is a very good romance, full of great characters, just complex enough that that ending had all the great punches I read this genre for, without making either of the main ones be mean or stupid. Really excellent. And free. I'd recommend this to anyone wanting to read a romance for the first time or any experienced reader.
Kelsey didn’t begrudge her friend, selling the land, it was the 6 Rescue horses she now was concerned about. What she had been charged was pittance, and had a place to live. Her plans for a youth camp now was on permanent hold.Coming back from town, finding boxes outside, while her little rundown place was being bulldozed. Trespassing to find owner, and giving him a piece of her mind. Joe is in a desperate need to hide from the world, and didn’t want to deal with his past, or her. Changes, healing, and dreams, came about from this one heated moment. Surprise ending that would bring more business to the town in a day, of what normally they did in a year. Delightful reading.
This is more than a quick read feel happy story. It hits you at gut level. Justine always writes at two levels minimum. This story of boy meets girl is a sideline here. The depth of character and empathy for the storyline is incredible. Well done on the approach and directness of these issues. Justine always amazes, this time it's even more.
This story took me on quite an emotional ride, and I loved every minute of it.
Kelsey starts out in quite a mood, finding out that the plot of land she has been living on has been sold and she and her horse rescue operation will have to move. But her spirits stay high, right up until she comes home to find them bulldozing her house with no warning. Her encounter with the new land owner was quite intense. Then she gets a bit of a surprise.
I loved Kelsey and Crazy Joe/Declan so much. The ups and downs were such a great ride. Kelsey is such a wonderful and caring character, always putting the horses before herself, and wanting to help everyone. Her raw emotions as she learns about Declan's childhood were right on the mark. Declan was actually really easy to fall in love with as a reader, even though he was eccentric and a recluse, he had a heart of gold and it was very evident right away.
I began this book this morning and literally had to read without stopping until the last page. The depth of the characters, the story, the emotion. The quality of all of these characteristics made Whiskey River Rescue one of the best books I've read this year. Justine Davis is one of my favorite authors and this book is reminiscent of her earlier love stories. Not really a suspense but there is a twist of a mystery. This book will go on your reread shelf. I loved it.
